Apna Karachi 2015

ApnaKarachi2015The Canorient Christian Accociation held their annual Apna Karachi Gala on September 19th 2015 in a beautuifully decorated hall at the Best Western Port O’Call Hotel in Northeast Calgary.

MC George Aranha’s welcome address in Urdu to the 135 guests in attendance, accompanied by Joel Lobo’s “trip down memory lane” slideshow brought back a lot of wonderful memories and got everyone reminiscing about the past.

DJ David from “Squiggly Sounds” played a great selection of music and kept the crowd on the floor the entire night. Guests were entertained by belly dancer Aphrodit Espanioli who, with her signature belly dancing moves, was able coax a number of ladies from the crowd to join her on the floor.

A delicious East Indian Buffet with appetizers and late night snacks along with numerous door prizes donated by our members, only added to the night’s festivities.

The committee would like to thank all who supported the event, especially those who donated prizes and their time to make the Apna Karachi a success.

Stampede 2015

Stampede InvitationOn July 4th, the Canorient Christian Association held their 2015 Stampede Dance to celebrate the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. This hoe down was held on a cool summer evening at the Inglewood Community Center, which was beautifully decorated, and was attended by over 100 guests, all dressed in their finest western wear.

In keeping with our theme of “Wild Wild West”, DJ Carol Lobo played a variety of music, especially Country Western, and was aptly supported by Zelma Carvalho, who got everyone in the “western” mood with some good ‘ole line dancing.

Our MC, Fred D’Souza, kept the crowd going throughout the night with his entertaining antics…thanks Fred. It was greatly appreciated.

With a scrumptious menu catered by Spolumbos, and a number of door prizes which were generously denoted by our members, we hope everyone had a great time.

The night ended with a heartfelt “thank you” speech by Anthony D’Costa, for the tremendous support from not only the sub-committee, but also others members of the association who supported the committee to make this event a success.

We hope to see you at our other upcoming events.

Annual Picnic 2015

Picnic2015The Canorient Christian Association held their annual Family Picnic on June 20th 2015 at Sandy Beach Park, a beautiful, pet friendly park, located along the scenic Elbow River in Southwest Calgary.

This free event for our members turned out to be a very successful one, with over 70 people in attendance. We had a picnic site complete with a fire pit, and adjacent to pathways and a playground for the kids to enjoy. Taking in the beautiful scenery, people enjoyed walking on the beach, wading in the shallow water, long walks and bicycling on the pathways. There were even a few four-legged friends enjoying themselves along with the rest of us.

The day progressed with tombola and a game of cricket, and when everything was said and done, tasty samosas and “chai” tea was served, keeping up with the tradition of “cricket” and “tea” going hand in hand.

In the afternoon, Mother Nature decided to join in the fun, and sprinkled us with some wet stuff, but then again… what’s a picnic without a bit of rain?

The committee would like to extend a big “Thank You” to all those that came out.

Hats, Heels & High Tea Social

Hats, Heels & High Tea

Hats, Heels & High Tea

Hats Heels & High Tea Social… A Success!!!

On the 2nd of May, Canorient, Calgary Chapter had their very first High Tea Social for the ladies and their girlfriends, at the Varsity Tower’s Lounge. This “all-women” venture was well received and eagerly supported by the ladies, I guess deep down, we all do relish the opportunity to get a little bit frocked up, sport a fetching hat and while away a few hours eating, drinking and laughing with our girlfriends.

As luck would have it, it turned out to be a beautiful day! The ladies strolled in, dressed either like British Royalty or Southern Belles and looked positively smashing! They were ushered into the lounge, which was transformed into an English Tea Parlour; the billiard table was converted into a smorgasbord of delectable high tea treats. I am pleased to add here that quite a few of the items were prepared by our very talented members *clap clap*. As the Brits would say, everyone had a “jolly good time”, they mixed, mingled, enjoyed the lavish spread and left happy with beautiful giveaways and a rose as a reminder of a wonderful afternoon.

A big thank you to the ladies who attended, your enthusiasm and support convinced me that “High Tea” is going to become a tradition in the Association, and when it does, we have 29 women who can call themselves the “First Ladies” of the Calgary Chapter’s High Tea. I also have to mention that our very first “English” and “Ladies Only” event coincided with the birth of Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge. The first girl to be born in the Monarchy in 25 years!! Talk about Royal beginnings!!

On behalf of the Canorient Executive Committee, Peggy and I would like to thank the ladies who helped make this day a fabulous success with their time, talent and donations:
Cheryl Monteiro, Maryanne Perdeck, Natalie D’souza, Sandy Almeida, Charmaine Monteiro, Shirley D’Costa, Candace Monteiro, Natasha DeWeerd, Ashley Olivera, Olive Rego, Queeny McMurray and Shania D’Costa.
We also have a member who generously donated gifts but wishes to remain anonymous.

Here are a few of many appreciations received:

Excellent party, the food, company, games, décor and prizes were all fantastic…” Zelma Carvalho.
Congratulations for having a wonderful High Tea event. Hope there will be more” Veronica Bennett.
“Thank you for organizing such a great tea party” Patricia McMurray (Queenie).
“Kudos and thanks for planning and coordinating a very successful event” Zenwill Sequeira.
“We enjoyed every minute of feeling special.”
“I had a wonderful time at the High Tea. Thank you for all your efforts, as I could see it was a lot of work.”
“Thanks for all your efforts and for coming up with the idea.” Natalie D’souza

Finally, I leave you with my favorite quote:
The tea kettle is always up to its neck in hot water and it still sings!

…and a Toast to “Royal Beginnings and Traditions”!

Vice President
Canorient Calgary Chapter
